He pulled his trousers up, surprising himself as he covered the lower half of her body with the bedsheet.

Something was happening between them, and it was anything but sexual. It was more like an unspoken understanding, a deep-rooted wish that somehow in this wicked world that they could be together.

Anežka was so confused. Whilst she remained married to Jakub Capek she would remain loyal to him. That did not mean she could not take a lover if she so desired, and if Gauntlett had a different occupation, she could even consider it. She had only one card to play, so she played it.

“I don’t want anyone else,” she said. “I would like to still see you sometimes. Maybe we can even be friends. But you must not kill my husband. I could never forgive you for that.”

Anežka certainly was a special woman. She cared about Capek far more than that monster deserved. Gauntlett wanted to hide some things from her but found it impossible in her presence. He thought he had a good friendship and understanding with Katuska. He viewed Anežka as more of a sexual conquest, a big fuck-you to Jakub Capek. But the more time passed, he admitted she was as magnetic to him as Matilda had been. He cared about her. It was so much better when he didn’t give a damn, but she wasn’t giving him the choice.

“Can you live with it if he kills me?”

“Yes, I could,” she replied machine-gun fire style, and without any hesitation.

Gauntlett felt he was getting in too deep with this woman. Perhaps he should have controlled himself, gone to the hotel on his own and masturbated with the thoughts of the young and nubile Katuska. That fantasy would be safe because it had crossed no lines. As the seconds passed into hours, in all likelihood, Matilda was already dead and on both a personal and professional level, Capek had to die. At least he was honest with Anežka about that. It didn’t mean she had to like what he had to say.
